An extra $100 million will be provided for repairs and maintenance to public housing in the Northern Territory.

The funds will be spent on construction, plumbing, electrical, roofing and security installations to increase the lifespan of housing stock by about 20 years.

"Investing in public housing right across the NT to create safe, secure housing for our most vulnerable Territorians while proactively boosting small businesses is not just the smart thing to do, it's the right thing to do," Housing and Community Development Minister Gerry McCarthy said on Monday.

The extra funds also followed the $69 million the government provided for similar work in February which allowed work to be carried out on 3000 homes.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner said the new government funding would provide a much-needed boost to local tradies during the usually quiet Christmas period.

"My number one priority is to create local jobs and this is a $100 million immediate job-creating stimulus package to help keep our local tradies in work and help subcontractors keep workers employed," he said.
