NT teen prison escapees charged

Two teens who broke out of a Darwin juvenile detention centre and then broke back in have been charged by police.

The two 16-year-olds, along with four others, trashed an education room and smashed up computers and furniture before breaking through to the roof and escaping over the barbed wire fence during a disturbance on Sunday night.

On Tuesday afternoon during a police chase in an allegedly stolen car, the pair returned to the centre, driving through the front roller doors and doing burnouts around the centre's yard for almost an hour before surrendering to police.

Police said on Friday that the boys had been jointly charged with criminal damage over $50,000, engaging in violent conduct, escaping from lawful detention, three counts of stealing, property damage, endangering occupants of vehicles, dangerous driving, and various traffic offences.

One boy will appear in Darwin Youth Justice Court on Friday, while the other will appear on Tuesday June 9.
