Police to charge man over hit-and-run

A 34-year-old man is expected to be charged over a hit-and-run that killed Darwin cyclist Jason 'Dickie' McCormick on New Year's Eve.

Detectives from NT Police's Major Crime Squad confirmed they had interviewed the man in relation to the incident.

Detective Senior Sergeant Tony Henrys said it would be alleged he was driving the blue Aurion when it hit Mr McCormick on Winnellie Rd about 10pm.

Mr McCormick had fallen off his bike outside the Winnellie Hotel when the car drove straight over him.

Police allege the two men in the rental car stopped briefly down the road before driving away.

The 34-year-old is expected to be charged when he fronts the Darwin Local Court on January 31.

Wayne Abdul Sultan was charged earlier this month with driving offences stemming from an alleged high-speed chase of the car believed to have killed Mr McCormick.

John McCormick flew to Darwin following his son's death, before he returned to the family's hometown of Kyabram in Victoria with Mr McCormick's body.

John McCormick told AAP on Monday he intended to send his son's ashes back to Darwin, the place he had lived for 15 years.

"That's where he wanted to be scattered, that was his wish," he said.

"That's where his home was."
