A man has died after his car hit a horse and rolled near Tennant Creek, throwing him out.

Three others were trapped in the car and suffered injuries, with one of them having to be cut out.

The car was travelling along the Stuart Highway 80km south of the central Australian town on Monday morning when it hit the horse and rolled several times.

There are many wandering horses and cattle in the area, prompting a warning from police.

"Drive to conditions, your capabilities and those of your vehicle, avoid travelling at night if possible and always be on the lookout for wandering stock," NT Police said in a statement.

The ABC reported that the man killed was from a well-known Aboriginal family and had been released from the Barkly prison work camp only on Sunday.

The Stuart Highway has been reopened to all traffic.
