NT govt pledges $1.25m for enviro groups

The Northern Territory government has announced $1.25 million in funding for three Top End environmental groups.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner says the money delivers on an election promise from Labor.

"If you want to have a strong economy, you have to have a healthy environment," he said.

"You can't have one without the other and you need contestable advice."

The Environment Centre of the Northern Territory (ECNT) in Darwin and the Arid Lands Environment Centre (ALEC) will both receive $100,000 each year for five years.

The Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) will also receive $50,000 a year over five years.

"This is the support that these groups need to be able to hold us to account and provide good policy, good research and good advice," Mr Gunner said.

All three organisations had their funding cut by the previous government.

They advocate on behalf of Territorians and the environment, while protecting the tourism, fisheries and agricultural industries.

Last month the NT government delivered another election promise by banning fracking while it conducts an independent inquiry.
