NT attorney-general moves to clean up govt

Northern Territory Attorney-General Natasha Fyles has used the second day of parliamentary sittings to introduce reforms aimed at restoring integrity to government.

Ms Fyles moved to improve transparency around member's interests, increase scrutiny of the government by changing question time and establish a new select committee to deliver parliamentary reform.

"Over the last four years we have seen the damage that a chaotic and dysfunctional government can cause," she said on Wednesday.

"We have seen this assembly descend into an utter farce at times. We have seen our parliament become the laughing stock of the country."

On Tuesday, the leader of the ousted Country Liberals Party apologised to Territorians for letting them down during a scandal-plagued term in office.

Ms Fyles moved that member's interests be made available online like all other jurisdictions.

The records are held at parliament house and can only be accessed in person.

"The sharing of this information is vital to restoring trust in government," she said.

Ms Fyles also moved to do away with 'Dorothy Dixers' on Wednesdays, meaning government backbenchers can no longer lob softball questions to ministers, allowing the opposition and independents a full hour of grilling.

The motion will be debated next week.

Ms Fyles moved to establish a select committee for parliamentary reform that includes members of the government, opposition and independents.

The committee will report back to the parliament in March 2017.
