More NT workers can claim compo from July

Northern Territory workers will be able to claim compensation for 12 additional work-related diseases without having to prove they were directly caused by their employment from July 1.

Hepatitis C, melanoma, ovary and larynx cancers, occupational asthma and contact dermatitis are some of the illnesses added to a longer list of 48.

If an employer believes the illness is not work-related they will have to challenge the compensation finding.

The government's latest measures to reduce red tape will also come into effect on Friday, after its Red Tape Abolition Squad streamlined processes and dumped paperwork requirements.

Farmers on pastoral leasehold land will now be able to diversify on their properties, food business registrations have been reformed and the government has removed more than 950 director liability offences and reduced liability for over 240 offences.

Compliance costs are also being cut for real estate agents, auctioneers, tobacco retailers, and liquor wholesalers and one-year licenses will be changed to an option of one, three or five years.

Other changes include reforms to the vocational and training system, laws which were only passed on Monday.

The Training and Skills Development Act puts more emphasis on training and skills development and is updated to ensure nationally recognised VET, and establishes the NT Training Commission of nine members from industry, business and employers.

The government says regulation has been improved to better protect apprentices and trainees, including banning employers who have violated the act.
