Men allegedly smuggle drugs, kids in car

Two men have been charged with attempting to smuggle drugs and alcohol into remote Northern Territory communities with seven children in their car.

Police pulled over a Landcruiser wagon early Thursday morning on the Stuart Highway near Adelaide River.

"A total of eleven people were travelling in the vehicle, including seven unrestrained children," Detective Sergeant Ian Kennon said.

"Following a search of the vehicle, police located a total of 173 grams of cannabis, a small quantity of kava, nine bottles of spirits and four litres of wine.

Police believe the drugs and alcohol were bound for vulnerable remote communities.

The 29-year-old driver was charged with possession and supply of a trafficable quantity of cannabis and unlicensed driving with unrestrained children.

A 32-year-old passenger was charged with possession and supply of cannabis.
