Man attacked by crocodile 'inside tent' on NT camping trip

A 19-year-old man is recovering in hospital after he was attacked by a crocodile in his tent while camping in the Douglas Daly region of the Northern Territory.

Peter Rowsell was camping beside a creek near Dorisvale crossing with his family yesterday morning when he was bitten on the foot by the crocodile, the ABC reports.

"At about 4.30 this morning ... I woke up and there was something shaking my foot, and I woke up and had a look and it was three to four metres long," Mr Rowsell said.

He said he hit the reptile "once or twice" on the head, which led to the crocodile releasing him and retreating back into the water.

Mr Rowsell's screams woke his fellow campers, who drove him to the Katherine Hospital, more than two hours' drive away.

He was treated for puncture wounds to his right foot and was also administered antibiotics.  

Experts recommend camping at least 50m from bodies of water known to be home to crocodiles.

Last year, more than 250 of them were removed from waterways around Darwin.
