Man granted bail over Darwin killing

A man involved in the killing of a Northern Territory man has been granted bail.

Soloman Gulimutmut, 31, appeared in the Darwin Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

He has been charged with manslaughter, aggravated assault, and making a false declaration after an incident in the Darwin beachside suburb of Nightcliff last month.

A 22-year-old man was found collapsed on a footpath with significant blood loss and a wound to his right arm late on February 12, after residents reported a loud disturbance, with a woman shouting and a man being chased.

Gulimutmut and the deceased are both from the remote indigenous island community of Milingimbi, about 600km east of Darwin.

Defence lawyer Beth Wild said a community meeting had resolved that the deceased's family would not seek payback, so he could safely reside in his home community with his family rather than moving to the neighbouring community of Raminginging.

The court heard Gulimutmut had no prior criminal history and was unlikely to flee.

"He obviously doesn't have a high degree of sophistication in negotiating his way around the world, he's a person who seems to have lived in (remote) communities or the like for most of his life; I don't see him going anywhere else, and he doesn't have the resources to go anywhere else," Magistrate Elisabeth Armitage said.

There is no police station in Milingimbi but police would visit the island roughly fortnightly and could keep tabs on him, the court heard.

Gulimutmut was released on bail on his own recognisance with a $500 surety.

He will next appear in court in April.

His co-accused Brett Yirrwalama, 27, who has been charged with murder, will also appear in court next month.

A 33-year-old woman, Alberta Mudaltjiwuy, has also been charged with aggravated assault and making a false declaration.
