Man dies after diving into NT backyard pool at Australia Day party

A young Darwin man who hit his head after diving into a backyard pool during an Australia Day party has died despite his friends' efforts to save him.

The 20-year-old suffered the fatal injury at a house party in Girraween around 4.10pm, the NT News reports.

The man emerged from the pool in cardiac arrest after striking his head, a St John Ambulance spokesman said.

His friends called 000 and were given instructions on how to perform CPR on the man over the phone.

A paramedic was about a kilometre away and arrived at the home within minutes of receiving the call but was unable to revive the 20-year-old.
