Man dead in buffalo crash,others airlifted

A man is dead after a car full of people hit a buffalo on a remote Northern Territory highway, in the second such accident in as many weeks.

Police say a 54-year-old man was travelling in a car with four other people in north-eastern Arnhem Land around 5am on Sunday when it crashed into the beast.

Their Land Cruiser station wagon rolled on the Central Arnhem Highway, 228km south of Nhulunbuy, Duty Superintendent Chris Board says.

"Tragically a male passenger died at the scene," he said.

"The driver was breath tested at the scene and returned a negative reading."

The others were taken to Gapuwiyak clinic for treatment to various non-life threatening injuries, including broken bones, Sup Board said.

There are conflicting accounts from authorities as to how many people were involved in the accident.

CareFlight says it sent out three aircraft to airlift six patients aged between 18 and 50 with "suspected spinal injuries, broken limbs and a suspected head injury".

They were all taken in a stable condition to the Royal Darwin Hospital by 3pm.

"CareFlight crews praised the efforts of staff members from Gapuwiyak Clinic and first responders who provided initial emergency treatment," a spokesperson said.

It comes after a 24-year-old driver and two passengers escaped unharmed from another head-on collison with a buffalo on the Arnhem Highway near Adelaide River last week.
