Man charged over Alice Springs stabbing

An Alice Springs man is facing assault charges after he allegedly broke a bottle over his partner's head and then stabbed her with it.

Police say the man, 25, and got into an altercation with his 24-year-old partner on Gap Road in Alice Springs on June 27.

"Police also allege the offender used the broken bottle to stab the woman before fleeing the scene," acting sergeant Caragh Hen said in a statement on Monday.

The woman was taken to Alice Springs Hospital to receive treatment for head injuries.

The man was arrested on Friday morning and charged with with two counts of aggravated assault and being armed with an offensive weapon at night.

He was remanded in custody and will appear in Alice Springs Magistrates Court on July 24.
