A 17-year-old boy has handed himself into Northern Territory police over an attempted arson attack at the MacKillop Catholic College in Johnston.

The teen has been charged overnight after the public allegedly recognised him from CCTV.

Detectives released security vision of a man allegedly pouring accelerant on a set of lockers before lighting three fires in the early hours of this morning.

Backfiring on the offender, the flames appear to have burst in his face.

Police aren't ruling out whether the incident is linked to previous vandalism attacks at the school that allegedly target religion.

The buildings suffered only minor damage but officers are treating the incident as serious given the dangerous and reckless behaviour.
