A tropical low is expected to bring storms, heavy rainfall and the chance of flash flooding to the Northern Territory's Top End over the weekend.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast severe weather conditions across the Top End over the weekend, with widespread heavy rainfall of up to 100mm in the Gregory and northern Tanami districts.

The bureau says a deep tropical low is moving slowly north from the northern Barkly, towards the central Top End.

Western parts of the Top End could could receive daily rainfalls of 200mm, particularly along the coast.

A flood watch alert remains in place for the Bonaparte and North West Coastal rivers, and persistent rain in the Victoria, Adelaide and Daly River catchments could lead to road closures.

The bureau says further flood warnings for some rivers may be issued in the coming days.
