Flood threat in Alice Springs

Record rain is expected to fall over Alice Springs putting suburbs at risk of flooding.

Weather bureau senior forecaster Steph Bond said heavy rains experienced on Friday were expected to be repeated on Saturday.

Alice Plaza, in the heart of Alice Springs, received 125 millimetres of rain since 9am on Friday.

Charles River Big Dipper has received 114mm of rain, Mount LLoyd has received 100mm and Alice Springs Airport has received just 43mm.

"Todd River is flooded at the moment," Ms Bond said.

"And we've had a few other rivers peak overnight too."

She said conditions on Sunday were expected to ease, and light rain was forecast for Monday.

Residents have taken to Twitter, posting photos of floodwaters across the town.
