Drunk driver caught in Macca's drive-thru

A man who fell asleep behind the wheel while ordering food at a McDonald's drive-through was one of 10 Northern Territory motorists who have been caught drink-driving by police.

The man ordered at a Darwin drive-though on Thursday and pulled over into the waiting bay where he fell asleep, before being woken by police and breath-tested.

He returned a blood alcohol level of 0.196, or almost four times the legal limit.

"When questioned by police, he said he was hungry and wanted a feed," a police spokeswoman told AAP on Friday.

His license was immediately disqualified and he was charged with high-range drink-driving, as was a 38-year-old man who blew a reading of 0.215 when pulled over in Leanyer.

Police said they were disappointed to have caught so many drink-drivers in one night, with four in Alice Springs, two in Ti Tree, one in Barunga and three in Darwin.

"This kind of behaviour shows a blatant disregard for the law and the safety of other road users," Sergeant Craig Dunlop said in a statement.

"Every year we see too many lives lost on our roads by reckless behaviour.

"The message is simple: if you're planning on having a few drinks, don't get behind the wheel. It's time we put an end to this stupidity."
