Northern Territory Deputy Chief Minister Nicole Manison has issued a Treasurer's Direction to NT Power and Water to fix the smell coming from the Leanyer sewage ponds.

"Residents have put up with this for too long, it is absolutely time that Power and Water now take the action to fix the issues that have been experienced at the ponds," she said.

Over the past 10 days the NT Environment Protection Authority received 30 complaints from residents in the suburbs of Leanyer, Muirhead, Lyons, Malak, Anula, Wanguri and Wulagi.

Ms Manison said the smell was becoming more noticeable, particularly when the tides rose and the winds picked up.

"People want certainty that the problem is going to be fixed, because they have been raising the issue for some time and they've had enough."

Power and Water has not provided a time frame in which the problem will be fixed.

The EPA is still investigating the cause of the smell.
