Police arrest 11-year-old after butter knife mugging in Darwin

Northern Territory police have arrested and charged an 11-year-old girl after she allegedly attempted to steal from a woman while armed with a butter knife.
Police say a 77-year-old woman was walking to her vehicle in a car park on Palmerston Circuit, about 1.30pm, when she was approached by the youth.
Police say the child then demanded money.

When the woman refused, investigators allege the girl punched the woman in the mouth, before fleeing on foot.
The woman was treated by paramedics at the scene.
Police arrested the youth a short time later, but she has since been released from custody as further investigations continue.
"Given her age, we need to consider whether she is suitable for youth diversion," said Watch Commander Siiri Tennosaar.
Detectives will summons the alleged offender to appear at the Darwin Youth Court next month, charged with one count of aggravated assault with intent to steal.
