Australia's largest youth survey has revealed the issues young Territorians are most concerned about.

While environmental issues and crime and safety remain significant, the cost of living has emerged as the most pressing concern.

"Traditionally, climate change has been a key concern for young people as well as mental health," Mission Australia regional leader Dr Paul Royce said.

"But we've changed that… certainly in the Northern Territory young people here are most concerned about the cost of living."

Cost-of-living concerns have nearly doubled compared to last year, with 56 per cent of young Territorians worried about it, up from 31 per cent in 2023.

Violence and crime follow closely behind, rising to 25 per cent from 18 per cent in 2023, while environmental concerns have dropped by 11 per cent, now at 27 per cent, down from 38 per cent in 2023.

This escalating cost of living is placing pressure on young people, forcing them to make difficult choices.

"Not only are they studying or going to school or surviving in any way they can, it's much harder now to pay rent, it is harder for them to get their food costs paid, also any medications," Royce added.

Amid these concerns, there are growing calls for better support systems.

"We would love to see a boost to the youth allowance, boost to Jobseeker, but also the Commonwealth rent assistance," Royce said.
