The Owen Springs power station in Alice Springs will get a $75 million upgrade, which the Northern Territory government says will increase reliability and efficiency of supply and reduce prices.

The expansion, due to be completed by December 2017, will also create 49 direct full-time jobs, the government said on Friday.

"Once works are complete we will see a significant reduction in maintenance and operating costs, and a reduction in noise and carbon emissions... These efficiencies should also see wholesale electricity price reductions of around 15 to 20 per cent," Treasurer David Tollner said in a statement.
