Tropical low moving towards Darwin no longer expected to become cyclone

Darwin and surrounding towns are no longer on Cyclone Watch as a tropical low tracks further inland with the risk of it intensifying dropping.

The tropical low is located hundreds of kilometres east of Darwin and will continue to move in a west-south-west direction during Thursday night and on Friday towards Darwin.

It's expected to pass close to the city late Friday and early Saturday, bringing wet and squally conditions, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting rainfall totals could reach up to 200 milimetres and warning of the risk of flash flooding.

The tropical low is expected to reach waters off the northeast Kimberley coast of Western Australia and once over water, it's expected to intensify during Saturday and develop into Tropical Cyclone Claudia.

Over the weekend, the system is likely to travel parallel to the coastline and then continue moving west-southwest, well offshore.

As it is still unpredictable, communities between Mitchell Plateau to Wyndham in WA are no under cyclone watch.
