A jury will continue its deliberations on Tuesday in the long-running retrial of Robert Xie, who is accused of murdering five relatives in their Sydney bedrooms.

After their first day of deliberations, Justice Elizabeth Fullerton sent the NSW Supreme Court jurors home on Friday afternoon ahead of the long weekend.

"It would be to put the trial at risk at this crucial stage if you were to discuss the case with anybody," she warned the nine men and three women.

Xie, 53, has pleaded not guilty to murdering the relatives of his wife Kathy Lin in their North Epping home in the early hours of July 18, 2009.

He is accused of using a hammer-like object to inflict horrific head injuries on his newsagent brother-in-law Min Lin, 45; his wife Lily Lin, 43; their sons Henry, 12, and Terry, 9; and Lily's sister Irene, 39.
