A man accused of hitting a woman in the head twice with a bottle and stabbing her in the chest two times as she lay in bed has been charged.

Police say the woman awoke at a Picnic Point home about 1am on Saturday and saw the man standing by her bed holding a bottle.

The man, 64, then allegedly attacked, striking her head with a bottle before stabbing her.

The woman, 60, ran to a neighbour's home and was taken to Liverpool Hospital, where she remains in a stable condition.

The man allegedly tried to flee in the woman's car but was caught with assistance from the dog squad.

He was taken to Bankstown Hospital and was later charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He is due to appear at Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday.
