A Sydney woman's face has been cut in a bizarre skateboard attack on her moving car in the city's south.

The 58-year-old and her husband were driving south on the Princes Highway at Tempe on Friday evening when they swerved around a man standing on the road, waving his arms around.

As the car passed, the man allegedly struck out at the front passenger window with his skateboard, police say.

The window shattered, the skateboard landed on the woman's lap, and her face was cut above the right eye. She was taken to St George Hospital for treatment.

Police seized the skateboard but its owner remains on the run.
