Wollongong man dies following a fight

A NSW man is dead after a fight in Wollongong.

Police were called about 5.15am on Saturday to break up an altercation between a 40-year-old man and a 22-year-old man.

Police used capsicum spray to subdue the 22-year-old, from Mount Keira, before arresting him.

They spoke with the 40-year-old man and a 77-year-old man who had tried to intervene in the altercation.

A short time later, the 40-year-old man collapsed at the scene.

He was immediately treated by ambulance paramedics and taken to Wollongong Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

The younger man was taken back to Wollongong Police Station and charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was granted bail and is scheduled to appear in Port Kembla Local Court on March 3.
