Wild Newcastle brawl caught on camera

Shocked Newcastle drivers have watched the occupants of two cars start a wild brawl on the side of a busy road.

Video taken from multiple angles about 4pm on Monday showed two cars stop at a set of lights on Maitland Road in Sandgate before three men and a woman jump out and immediately start attacking each other.

The incident lasted almost a minute and saw all four people punch, kick and head-butt one another in front of an audience of stunned motorists.

One of the angles of the fight was recorded by NEWFM news reader Alexander Heinke who later posted the footage to Twitter.

After the brief brawl the group got back in their cars and left leaving behind one of the men's shirts.

Witness CJ Van Rensburg told Fairfax Media he saw the second vehicle driving erratically with both the female driver and male passenger leaning out the windows and yelling at the car in front.

"They started brawling on the sidewalk," Mr Van Rensburg said.

"Why that is, I don't know, but certainly the car that is closest to my vehicle, they seemed to be the agitators."

Mr Van Rensburg said he initially couldn't explain the drivers' behaviour.

"Just the way they acted in the cars was ludicrous," he said. "Once they stopped and got out of the cars and started brawling, I thought yeah, it's some road rage thing going on."

NSW Police is aware of the incident.
