Volunteer NSW parole supervisors 'at risk'

A NSW government plan to have volunteers supervise paroled prisoners is obscene, opposition leader Luke Foley says.

Mr Foley said volunteers would provide accommodation and have responsibility for supervising and monitoring criminals while they are on parole but still serving sentences.

Budget papers from 2012 to 2014 show $50 million and 153 staff were cut from offender supervision programs, he said, adding "the government should be looking at tougher parole conditions not handing over paroled prisoners to well-meaning volunteers."
