A community on the NSW south coast is in mourning after a violent rampage that allegedly saw a young man murder his grandmother and then a retired police officer.

Murray Deakin, 20, had allegedly stabbed his grandparents when he attempted to carjack Mick Horne, 54, in Bega on Friday afternoon.

During the carjacking Mr Horne, a retired senior constable from the area, was struck in the head with a hammer.

Deakin's grandmother and Mr Horne died of their wounds in hospital.

"Micks cheerful smile and happy chats will be missed," one friend wrote on Facebook on Monday.

"Mick you will be missed. A policeman to the end," another wrote alongside a blue heart.

Deakin was refused bail, charged with two counts of murder, when he faced Batemans Bay Local Court on Monday.

He is expected before the same court again on August 7.

His grandfather is recovering in hospital.
