Toys ripped from shelves weeks before Xmas

Frozen's singing Elsa has been silenced and ripped from the shelf as part of a pre-Christmas crackdown on the sale of dangerous toys.

A derailed Thomas the Tank Engine, Peppa Pig's family holiday car and an Angry Bird are among the 83 children's toys to have been removed from NSW store shelves only weeks before the festive season.

The NSW government checked more than 770 businesses across NSW targeting previously problematic discount stores, pop-up shops and bargain warehouses.

Compliance officers snatched 68 children's toys, ten projectile toys and five aquatic toys all classified as "non-compliant" during this year's survey.

NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe said the greatest concerns were toys from popular franchises that present multiple hazards to small children, incorrect safety labelling and choking dangers.

"It is very easy for a small business to go to Shanghai and fill a suitcase with non-compliant toys and then put them on the shelves in a discount store in Sydney somewhere," Mr Stowe told AAP.

"Most concerning were some of the toys like the Peppa Pig set and the Disney Frozen franchise that are particularly sought after."

Almost $16,000 worth of penalty notices were issued with 17 prosecutions in progress.
