A total fire ban will be in place across northern NSW on Wednesday due to expected hot and windy conditions.

The ban will cover the North Western and Upper Central West Plains regions where a severe fire danger rating is in place.

The council areas affected are Moree Plains, Narrabri, Walgett, Warrumbungle, Bogan, Coonamble, Gilgandra and Warren.

A very high fire danger rating will also be instated for the Greater Sydney, Greater Hunter, Central Ranges, Northern Slopes, Southern Slopes and Lower Central West Plains.

Under a total fire ban, no fires may be lit in the open and all fire permits are suspended.
