A young man threw a pair of scissors at his girlfriend's head with such force that they became lodged in her skull, NSW Police say.

Detectives say the 18-year-old victim asked her 21-year-old partner to pass the scissors to her at their Ashmont home near Wagga Wagga last week.

Instead, he threw them at her, and the scissors became "embedded in the top of her skull", a police spokesperson said in a statement on Tuesday.

Paramedics were unable to remove the scissors so the woman was taken to a local hospital before being transferred to St George Hospital in Sydney.

The man was charged on Monday night with reckless wounding and was refused bail to appear at Wagga Wagga Local Court on Tuesday.

The injured woman is in good health following treatment.
