A man has been charged with murder and impersonating police after his time on the run ended with him crashing his motorbike into an unmarked police car.

The 24-year-old on Monday was formally accused of being one of three men who broke into a home near Lake Macquarie on December 17 and fatally wounded a 60-year-old man.

Two other men aged 19 and 23 have already been charged with murder.

Police had wanted to speak to the third man before he crashed into a police car in Jewells about 11pm on Sunday.

He was taken to hospital as a precaution before he was charged with the murder and two dozen other offences including impersonating police, escaping police custody and warrant offences.

The man was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Bail Court on Tuesday.

Police say the alleged murder victim was in his bedroom in his Whitebridge home when attacked by three men armed with baseball bats and knives.

The man's two brothers were in the home at the time but weren't harmed.
