Teenage horse rider dies during equestrian event in Hunter Valley

A 17-year-old girl has died during a horse-riding competition near Scone in the Hunter Valley today.

Olivia Inglis was competing at a property off Gundy Road at Gundy when she fell off her horse about 9.20am, initial reports to police suggest.

Witnesses said they saw her come off the horse when she was attempting a jump, the NSW Police Force said in a statement.

Paramedics were called and attempted to treat her, but Olivia died at the scene.

Organisers have expressed their condolences to the Inglis family and have arranged counselling services for anyone at the event.

"It is with the deepest regret we announce that Olivia Inglis suffered a tragic accident whist competing in the cross country phase at the Scone Horse Trials, today Sunday 6th March," the Scone Horse Trials Organising Committee said in a statement.

"Olivia was riding the family's Coriolanus in the two star competition, this morning when the accident occurred.

"Olivia was given urgent medical attention, attended by the on-course paramedic, the on-course doctor and the Westpac rescue helicopter service but unfortunately was unable to be revived."

Police are investigating and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
