Teen charged with terrorism refused bail

A 17-year-old boy accused of trying to travel to Syria to join Islamic State has been refused bail.

The teen, who did not appear at Parramatta Children's Court on Thursday, was arrested earlier on Thursday and charged with preparing to commit a terrorist offence and giving or receiving services to promote a terrorist offence.

His lawyers did not apply for bail, which was formally refused.

The youth, who cannot be named, was arrested along with 24-year-old Mehmet Biber during a string of raids by Australian Federal Police and NSW Police across Sydney's southwest on Thursday morning.

Police said the 17-year-old tried to travel to Syria to join Islamic State in January last year but was stopped at the airport.

Court documents stated the teen also "intentionally performed services" for another man with the intention of committing a terrorist offence between April and September this year.

The teen has no prior criminal history, court documents revealed, and lives with his parents in Sydney's west.

The boy will remain behind bars until his next court appearance on December 15.
