Teen charged over brother's death in crash

A teenager is dead and his big brother is behind bars following a fatal crash in the NSW Riverina.

Police allege a 19-year-old man was doing burnouts in his Ford sedan at The Rock, near Wagga Wagga, on Sunday afternoon when he lost control of the car and it flipped onto its roof.

The young man suffered only minor injuries but his brother, 13, died at the scene.

The 19-year-old, who can't be named for legal reasons, faced Wagga Wagga Local Court on Monday charged with negligent driving occasioning death, driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, and an offence associated with drag racing.

It is alleged the teenager had never held a driver's licence when he got behind the wheel.

Local police chief Bob Noble said the elder brother's alleged role in the tragedy "only compounds" the family's grief.

"We all feel for them irrespective of the terrible situation," Superintendent Noble told ABC radio on Monday.

Court records indicate the 19-year-old did not enter a plea on Monday and that he was refused bail, meaning he is likely to remain behind bars until the case returns to court on June 8.
