Teen charged over Sydney crash, pursuit

A teenager has been charged and three other young men remain on the run after an early morning pursuit and crash in Sydney's southwest.

Officers stopped a white Toyota Kluger on the Hume Highway in Lansvale at 3am on Wednesday after registration plate checks revealed the vehicle was stolen.

But the car, with four young men inside, sped off and later crashed into a retaining wall at one of the exits.

A 17-year-old male passenger was arrested at the crash site and taken to Liverpool Hospital where he was treated for a broken wrist.

He was subsequently charged with being carried in conveyance without the consent of the owner and breach of bail.

He's due to face a children's court on Thursday.

Police are urging the other three young men to hand themselves into police.

"The key issue for drivers and their passengers in those situations is when those red and blue lights come on, they really need to pull over and wait for further instruction from police," Chief Inspector Phil Brooks told the Seven Network.

"At this hour of the morning, anything's possible and particularly on wet roads - as we are experiencing rain at the moment - the outcome could have really been quite catastrophic."

The chief inspector said the actions of the driver and the risk to the public "sadly reflect" the 185 deaths on NSW roads this year.

More than 500 highway patrol cars and 80 general duty police vehicles have automatic number plate recognition in NSW.

They activate six times a second to reveal unregistered, uninsured, stolen or wanted vehicles.
