Taronga welcomes spring chimp baby

Just in time for school holiday visitors, Taronga Zoo has welcomed the arrival of another baby chimp.

Following the birth of a young male, Sudi, in August, keepers were delighted to discover another little scamp in the chimpanzee dens on Monday.

It's the third healthy baby for senior group member Lisa, who already has alpha male Lubutu and daughter Lani.

The new chimp is already out and about exploring his surroundings while staying close to his mother.

"The baby is suckling well, appears very healthy and is quite vocal when he's not sleeping in his mother's arms," said primate supervisor Lou Grossfeldt.

His mother is also proud of the new addition.

"Lisa is a very relaxed mother and has shown her great experience since the birth, confidently carrying her youngster out into the Chimpanzee Sanctuary to the delight of visitors," said Ms Grossfeldt.

The chimp will be named in the coming weeks by keepers who will pick a name in keeping with his African heritage.
