Take train to skip airport jam: NSW govt

Sydney Airport's traffic gridlock has forced the state government to promise an immediate relief package.

Minister for Roads Duncan Gay announced anti-congestion measures taking effect from Thursday including an Airport Traffic Coordination Committee, improved real-time traffic updates and motorcycle police to direct traffic.

"It is totally unacceptable that people are missing flights or are sitting in traffic for way too long trying to get in and around Sydney Airport," he said on Thursday.

However, keys parts of the "immediate" package won't be completed for at least another year including the three-lane expansion of Marsh Street.

The widening of Joyce Drive and General Holmes Drive and an underpass to Botany Road won't begin until the end of this year and won't be finished until the end of 2018.

These projects were included in the $500 million worth of upgrades announced by Sydney Airport and the government more than a year ago.

Mr Gay said motorists will notice on-the-ground improvements in the coming weeks including syncing traffic lights to only let motorists access the airport when there is enough space for them, instead of being held up outside.

In the meantime, the Minister for Roads suggested travellers catch the train to beat congestion.

"It's $16, I guarantee no traffic problems and it's certainly cheaper than a taxi or parking," he said.
