Sydney woman dies after domestic assault

A woman has died in a Sydney hospital after being allegedly bashed so severely by her partner she was placed on life support.

Linda Locke, 51, was found with head injuries, a collapsed lung and a bruised face at her Quakers Hill home in Sydney's west on Monday morning.

Police believe she had been in an argument with her long-term partner, Jamie Christopher Walker, 46, before she was assaulted.

Ms Locke was placed on life support at Westmead Hospital but died on Tuesday night.

Walker was charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, but police expect further charges to be laid.

Ms Locke is the 34th woman to be killed as a result of violence in Australia this year, according to Counting Dead Women, a project run by women's action group Destroy the Joint.

AAP has been told the couple had lived in the Quakers Hill complex for about five years.

One neighbour, who asked not to be named, said he often heard the pair fighting.

"I heard banging and screaming early and when I woke up, I knew it was them," he said.

"There were a few police cars and then forensic cars. I thought it must have been pretty bad."

According to Counting Dead Women, a group tracking the number of women killed by violence, 33 females have died this year alone in Australia.

That figure does not include Ms Locke's death.

Last year in NSW, domestic violence murders claimed the lives of 27 women - five more than the previous year.
