Mike Baird hopes a new research hub in Sydney will help people fighting health challenges, like the NSW premier's own mother.

Mental health accounts for more than 40 per cent of all health-related disability in Australia and researchers believe the University of Sydney's new Brain and Mind Centre could have the answers to some of its mysteries.

"My mum is in the midst of her own health challenges and part of what I see here, my hope is, some of the research that comes will mean she has a better chance, but just as importantly, those that come have a better chance in terms of quality of life," Mr Baird said at the launch of the centre on Tuesday.
