Sydney town crier calls in Moore's return

With his booming voice, Sydney town crier Graham Keating has announced the arrival of some of the world's most influential people such as Bill Clinton and Bill Gates.

Decked out in colonial uniform on Wednesday, the theatrical 74-year-old officially declared Clover Moore had been returned as City of Sydney mayor for a fourth term.

Mr Keating fell into the role when he performed as a town crier at colonial theme park Old Sydney Town in the 1980s.

"A lot of people from overseas had seen my town crying, and they wanted me to compete and attend festivals," Mr Keating said on Wednesday outside the city's Town Hall.

"I became the official town crier for the City of Sydney in 1986."

He said presenting former US president Bill Clinton at Randwick Racecourse in 2001 was a highlight.

"It's been very exciting," he said. "I love the people, I love performing and I love the art of projection."

Town criers, who customarily carry handbells, were traditionally employed to make public announcements within a town or community.
