An unattended item that led to a Sydney shopping centre being evacuated has been deemed not suspicious by police.

The alarm was raised at St Marys Village in the city's west on Friday morning and led to emergency services setting up an exclusion zone.

The package was reportedly found in the men's toilet.

Detectives want to speak to a man who may be able to assist with inquires.

He is described as being of Caucasian appearance, 180cm tall, with a solid build. He was last seen wearing three-quarter-length khaki pants and a black T-shirt.

The incident comes a day after Circular Quay was closed down after a suspicious package was found on a ferry.

Harbour City Ferries later confirmed it to be a training device.
