Sydney's bays precinct to get facelift

A cast of world-renowned urban planners and builders are gathering in Sydney to brainstorm ways to revive the city's desolate harbourside areas.

The two-day international summit, starting Wednesday, will look at the entire Bays Precinct - including Blackwattle Bay, the Sydney Fish Market, Rozelle Bay and Rozelle rail yards.

It also covers White Bay Power Station, which recently had its roof restored at a cost of $5.7 million and is now ready for a makeover.

NSW Planning Minister Pru Goward said the precinct will be Sydney's largest urban renewal project since the 2000 Olympics.

"So much potential lays in the 5.5km of waterfront land, that's currently an urban wasteland, around the world's most recognised and beautiful harbour," she said.

"On November 19 and 20, the who's who of urban renewal and city building leaders from around the globe will lend their experience to a think tank to help get the most out of this once in a lifetime opportunity for Sydney."
