Sydney's strict pub lockout laws to be lifted for New Years Eve

Sydney's tough new lockout laws will reportedly be lifted for one night only on New Year's Eve to give revellers the chance to travel from the fireworks to the Kings Cross party strip.

Pubs in Kings Cross and other streets in central Sydney are forced to bar their doors to new customers at 1.30am, as part of a state government crackdown on drunken street violence.

However, on New Year's Eve partygoers will be able to enter licensed premises until 3am, News Corp has reported.

Pubs and clubs will still not serve drinks past 3am, nor will takeaway alcohol be available for purchase after 10pm.

Deputy Premier Troy Grant said the temporary policy would improve safety.

It was feared people would rush from the fireworks to the city to be there by 1.30am, in particular making disembarking from ferries more dangerous than it needed to be.

At 2013's New Year's Eve celebrations, teenager Daniel Christie died after being king-hit in Kings Cross.

His death was one of the main motivations behind then-Premier Barry O'Farrell's determination to put the new anti-violence measures in place.
