Sydney nightlife inquiry's key suggestions

KEY RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE JOINT SELECT COMMITTEE ON SYDNEY'S NIGHT-TIME ECONOMY:

- The removal of 1.30am lockout laws and 3am last-drinks laws in the Sydney CBD, including Oxford Street, as well as the prohibition on shots after midnight

- The extension of bottle shop trading hours from 11pm to midnight between Monday and Saturday, and to 11pm on Sunday

- A review of the Kings Cross lockout laws in 12 months time, with the possibility of removing restrictions if key problems are addressed

- The creation of a "pathway" program for Kings Cross venues to transfer out of the precinct, reducing the density of bars and clubs

- Improvements on street layout, lighting and signage in Kings Cross

- The appointment of an "overarching co-ordinator" to help Sydney nightlife economy stakeholders liaise and collaborate on safety

- The creation of a stakeholders' working group, including police, medical professionals, community groups and business representatives

- Venues that self-report safety breaches to be, where appropriate, given a reduced penalty or to avoid penalisation

- The exploration of 24-hour Sydney public transport on weekends

- Government funding to promote Sydney's nightlife internationally.
