A man will re-appear in court for a second time, charged with five counts of sexual intercourse with a child, after he allegedly engaged a teenage boy online and sexually assaulted him in Sydney's east.

Detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad began an investigation last month over reports a 15-year-old boy had been sexually assaulted by a man he met on a social media application in June.

A 38-year-old man was arrested at a home in Potts Point early on August 22 and charged with child sex offences and possession of steroids, after police allegedly found four vials of testosterone at the home.

NSW Police will allege in court the man made arrangements to meet with the teenager for sex at a home in Potts Point on several occasions in July.

The man is due to appear in Central Local Court on Thursday.
