A young Sydney tradesman who died on a European holiday in Croatia had told friends he wanted to make the most of his life just days earlier.

23-year-old Alex Daleo, from the Sutherland area, was on a yacht in Croatia last week when he tried to jump from one boat to another and hit his head.

Just before setting off on the holiday, he took to Facebook to express his optimism for the trip.

“Someone once told me that one day your life will flash before you so make it worth watching,” Mr Daleo wrote on June 17.

“Today I set out with my best mates to make that movie worth watching for so many different reasons.

“Sydney will always be here so see you when I see you.”

Mr Daleo's death has prompted an outpouring of grief from friends and family, particularly his twin brother Lucas.

"I'm truly blessed to have spent the past 23 years with you by my side even through all the times we were fighting, the love was always there," he wrote on Facebook.

"I am so glad that we got to travel the world together before you were taken from us."

Social media paints a picture of a young, outgoing tradesman who had been travelling with his mates through Europe, taking in an international festival in Belgium and visiting popular tourist destinations including Barcelona and Ibiza.

Croatia is a hot spot during the European summer with thousands flocking to the coast for sailing and parties.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed consular assistance was provided to the family.
