Sydney man charged after homeless attack

A man who allegedly smashed a bottle into the face of a sleeping homeless man before bashing him with a shopping trolley has been charged with attempted murder.

The homeless man, 38, was attacked while sleeping on a bench in Sydney's Hyde Park, according to police.

He is in a stable condition in hospital after suffering bleeding to the brain and lungs.

The assault was only stopped when a passer-by intervened, protecting the victim with his bicycle in the early hours of Sunday.

Police arrested a 52-year-old man and charged him with attempted murder, to appear at Sydney's Central Local Court on Monday.
