Sydney funeral for writer Bob Ellis

A funeral service will be held in Sydney for author, commentator and former Labor speechwriter Bob Ellis.

The 73-year-old, who battled liver cancer, will be honoured with a public service at his graveside at Frenchs Forest Bushland Cemetery at 11am on Saturday.

A Seventh Day Adventist who grew up in Lismore in NSW, Ellis wrote speeches for Labor leaders including Paul Keating, Kim Beazley, Bob Carr and Mike Rann.

He was also a political commentator, author, screenwriter and playwright.

Ellis died surrounded by family at his Palm Beach home in Sydney on Sunday afternoon.

A wake will be held at Belrose Hotel following the funeral.
